Caz Heise, the community-backed independent candidate for Cowper, today unveiled a bold Local Food and Produce Strategy to boost support for local farmers, strengthen regional food security, and build a thriving local economy.
“Local food production is at the heart of our region’s identity and future,” Caz said.
“For too long, small and medium-sized farmers have been pushed aside by corporate control, supply chain centralisation, and a lack of local investment. My plan is about standing with local farmers, building a stronger local food economy, and making sure every family in our region has access to fresh, affordable food.”
Caz stressed the significant consultation with a wide range of stakeholders, including local farmers, community groups, and food security experts, to ensure that the strategy meets the diverse needs of our region.
The strategy focuses on:
-
Supporting local farmers by breaking corporate bottlenecks, strengthening supply chains, and ensuring fairer prices for local produce.
-
Investing in regional food processing to create jobs, add value locally, and reduce dependence on centralised and vertically integrated processing systems.
-
Protecting local farmers and the community by stopping illegal practices that damage land, water, and community trust — and ensuring responsible farmers are not undercut by those who break the rules.
-
Attracting and supporting the next generation of farmers through training, mentoring, and pathways into land ownership.
-
Improving community health by making fresh, locally grown food more affordable and accessible.
Statements attributable to Caz Heise
“This strategy is about making Cowper a national leader in local food production — creating jobs, strengthening communities, and making fresh, local food more affordable for everyone.”
“Our rich soil and ideal climate present an unparalleled opportunity for growth in small and medium-scale farming and local food manufacturing. If elected, I will champion this future for our region.”
“The disruptions we’ve seen in recent years show how vulnerable our food supply chains have become. Strengthening local food systems isn’t just good for farmers — it’s about securing our future and making sure we can always feed ourselves, no matter what challenges come.”
“Our future depends on growing the next generation of farmers, strengthening local food supply chains, and making sure fresh, healthy food is accessible to every family across Cowper.”
“If we want local food to have a future, we need to invest in the next generation. That means training, mentoring, and support to help young people turn farming dreams into viable businesses.”
