Caz Heise, Independent Candidate for Cowper, is pledging her support to collaborate with Dementia Australia on the critical issues facing Australians living with dementia and their families.
As a nurse and health care leader, Caz understands the profound impact that dementia has on individuals, families, and the broader community. With current statistics indicating that dementia is set to become the leading cause of death in Australia, Caz stresses the need for immediate action at all levels of government.
“I appreciate the vital work that Dementia Australia does in advocating for those affected by dementia,” Caz stated.
“Dementia is not just a personal affliction; it is a pressing societal concern that demands our attention and commitment and our workforce must be equipped to provide compassionate and effective care”.
In line with her own recently announced policies on Aged Care and the Health Workforce, Caz has outlined several key areas of focus to ensure that dementia care remains a priority if she is elected:
-
National Conversation on Dementia: will advocate for initiatives that educate communities about dementia and promote brain health from an early age. Increased awareness is essential to reduce stigma and encourage preventive measures.
-
Establishment of Care Coordinators: emphasise the need for a dedicated team of dementia specialist care coordinators at Dementia Australia to help families navigate the complexities of the care system, ensuring they have access to necessary resources and support.
-
Workforce Training and Development: committed to pushing for policies that invest in training healthcare professionals to meet the unique needs of individuals living with dementia. “Our workforce must be equipped to provide compassionate and effective care,” she stated.
-
Promoting Good Brain Health: advocate for public education programs that focus on lifestyle choices to reduce the risk of developing dementia, acknowledging that while we cannot change genetics or aging, we can influence brain health.
Caz has also met with a number of people who provide care for their family members and understands the need for services and resources to support these family members.
Geoffrey from Port Macquarie, said: "As one of the carers for my mother during her years with dementia, I know the emotional and physical toll it takes on the family. We need more support, better resources, and a greater understanding of the impact on families to ensure that no one faces this journey alone."
As a representative of the Cowper community, Caz will support the integration of dementia care within the broader healthcare framework, addressing challenges such as long wait times for home care packages and ensuring timely access to aged care services.
“The time to act is now. By working together with Dementia Australia and other stakeholders, we can transform the future for Australians living with dementia, and their families, and secure the support they need,” Caz said.
